SPEAKER
Michael S. Bell, Art Consultant and Curator, will be giving tips on "Getting Your Artwork Out There and Visible!" Mr. Bell's work involves offering appraisals, expert testimony and career management for arrtist and collectors of Joplin, The Ozarks and Missouri. His presentation will be free to the public on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
JUDGE
George "Papa" Tutt, President of the Missouri Watercolor Society. Mr. Tutt is a professional artist and teacher having served as Head of the Art Departments of William Woods and Wetminster Colleges in Fulton, Missouri. On Friday, October 12, 2007 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, he has agreed to do a workshop titled "How to Structure Paintings That Sell Using Composition & Color Techniques." He will also talk about "How to Enter Juried Competitions" as well as doing a hands-on presentation on "Creating Vignettes That Sell" during the afternoon.
SPONSOR
The Competition Workshop and Exhibit is sponsored by the Southwest Missouri Art Alliance, formerly the Art Alliance of Neosho. It exists solely due to the efforts of individuals who give of their time to volunteer once a year to make it happen along with the spring ART EXPO. These volunteers come from area art organizations and include interested individuals who feel the time is right for an across the board exhibit of regional art and interchange of these artists for the future artistic development of the area.
SHOW DETAILS
- Two Level Show of Professional and Emerging Artists with three awards and numerous Merit Awards in each division plus a Best of Show and Artist's Choice Awards overall.
-The exhibit will be open to the public for a two-week period with an opening reception to be held Saturday, October 13th from 3:30-5:30 PM in the Longwell Museum. The exhibit will be open on weekends from 1:00-4:00 PM. This year, sale proceeds go 100% to the artists.

ESSAY CONTEST

PURPOSE
Encourage student writing and an appreciation of this region’s influence on Thomas Hart Benton’s life and work.
REGISTRATION
Registration will take place at the Thomas Hart Benton Symposium to be held at The Bridge in Joplin, Missouri April 13, 2007. Symposium attendance is a prerequisite for entry and registration in the essay contest. Information available at www.bentonfestival.com. Because of MAP testing conflicts, middle school (7th and 8th grade) students that attend any part of Friday’s symposium (morning or afternoon) will be allowed to enter this contest.
FORMAT
Entries may be no more than two double spaced pages. The entrants printed name, signature, address, telephone number (cell and home), school attending and grade will be provided on the back of the last page of the essay.
WRITING PROMPT
“What is it about Thomas Hart Benton's work that appeals to such a large audience, and why has his work stood the test of time?”
ENTRY CATEGORIES
-Ninth Grade and Under
-High School, tenth through twelfth grade
-Above High School (Open to all students and non students)
PRIZES AND RECOGNITION
Cash prizes will be awarded in each entry category for first, first runner-up and second runner-up. Prize awards will be $300, $150 and $50 within each category. Winning entries will be provided to print media in this region through press releases and the winning entries will be recognized during a press conference to be held in May.

PURPOSE
As part of Newton County's Thomas Hart Benton Festival, Crowder College, the Carver Birthplace District Association, and the Newton County Tourism Council of Missouri, is co-sponsoring the annual Thomas Hart Benton Mural Design Competition. This year’s theme is the life and work of agricultural chemist and inventor, George Washington Carver. Our goal is to promote the mural art form in and near Newton County, Missouri, and nationally while creating awareness of and appreciation for the great murals of Newton County's native son, Thomas Hart Benton.
SPONSORING AGENTS AND THE AWARD
The Thomas Hart Benton Award - $2,000
The Newton County Tourism Council (NCTC) and the Carver Birthplace District Association (CBA) are the sponsors of the $2,000 Thomas Hart Benton Award.
If there is sufficient quantity of entries, separate awards may be given for professional and amateur/emerging artists.
ELIGIBILITY
The mural design competitions are open to all artists (amateur and professional). No entry fee is required. No work that has been previously entered may be entered again.
Works must be original (no reproductions). All employees or committee members of Crowder College (CC), the NCTC, or the CBA are ineligible. Artists are invited to submit a mural design (or more than one) for the contest.
GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER THEMES
Art themes relating to any aspect of George Washington Carver’s life or contributions are acceptable. The World Wide Web has a plethora of information that you can use. In addition, the CBA supports the website of the National Park Service’s George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Missouri: http://www.nps.gov/gwca/.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE ENTRY
The winning mural design will be used to create a mural in the new Visitor’s Center at the George Washington Monument in Diamond, Missouri. The mural will be painted on a corner to allow viewing from two different perspectives. It will be painted on a wall corner with these dimensions:
To prepare for this space, the dimensions of the mural design must be approximately 10" x 30" on stretched canvas or materials such as masonite panels. Artists may choose to paint on a larger canvass or panel leaving blank spaces in the boundaries. Artwork must be in oil or acrylic.
Art submissions that are too complex for a commissioned muralist to transition to a large mural (e.g. pointillism, photographic detail, etc.) will not be considered for the winning award.
Any submissions with the artist's signature on the front (or in view of jury) will be disqualified. Signatures can be added after the competition.
All entries must be accompanied with either a short written description or key of any historical or symbolic elements. This information will help the judges fully appreciate the art entries.
The NCTC, CC, or the CBA reserve the right to exclude any submitted work which it deems to be inappropriate.
PLANNED EXHIBITION AND USE OF ENTRIES
Beginning April 13th, 2007, selected works will be exhibited as part of the Thomas Hart Benton Festival. For two to three weeks, these works may be exhibited throughout Newton and adjacent counties.
All entrants grant the NCTC, CC, and the CBA non-exclusive license to reproduce and display the artwork for any purpose.
The NCTC, CC, and the CBA reserve the rights by way of non-exclusive license to reproduce the winning mural design for purposes of, but not limited to, public display, reproduction of a mural, promotional materials, public relations, and marketing materials. All entrants will also be required to adhere to the same stipulations for rights as is laid out herewith.
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
The winning mural designs will be awarded on April 13, 2007, at the "Thomas Hart Benton Festival" opening ceremony.
OPTIONAL AUCTIONING OF WORK
With the mutual approval of the artists and the NCTC, CC, and the CBA, entries may be auctioned off during the THB Festival with a starting bid amount set by the artist. Twenty percent of the earnings will be kept by the NCTC to support the Festival.
JUDGING
A panel of artists, educators, NCTC and CBA members will jury the entries.
PUBLICITY
For purposes of publicity herewith described, but not limited to, the NCTC, CBA, and CC reserve the right to use any and/or all mural designs for photographs, reproductions, public relations, and/or marketing materials or other means and uses for publicity.

INSURANCE, LIABILITY, TRANSPORTATION AND PICK-UP
The NCTC, the CBA, and CC will exercise all due care in the handling of artwork but will not assume liability for loss or damage during transit.
Artists are encouraged to secure their own insurance during shipping. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs and arrangements. Artists may arrange to pick up artwork from Crowder College or may request that they be sent back COD.
Artists wanting to pick up their work must do so from May 7th to May 11th at Crowder College between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
