Diamond

Some 20 years before the Civil War, settlers began occupying land that is now the city of Diamond. As people, mostly farmers, began to congregate, the community became known as "Round Grove," and then it was called "Center." In the 1870s, businesses were established which led to the establishment of a post office. In 1883, the new postmaster officially established "Diamond" as the town name.

Over the years, the community has been based on agriculture, with mining as a secondary industry. A progressive town, Diamond has invested wisely in a good educational system and retained a thriving business climate with feed stores, gas stations, cafes and a bank. Recent businesses include antique, collectible and crafts shops, car washes and convenience stores.

One of Newton County's major tourist sites is the George Washington Carver National Monument. This monument, located three miles west of Diamond, is where George Washington Carver was born into slavery. Rising out of that slavery, Dr. Carver became one of America's most distinguished scientist.

Each year the community holds GEM City Days to celebrate the past, present and future of the town.
