FairviewWhen steel lines for the Missouri and North Arkansas Railway were laid in the southeast part of Newton County, people began to settle alongside the tracks. Thus was born a small village that its founders proclaimed held a "fair view" of the surrounding prairie. Incorporated in 1909, Fairview became a mainstay on the old MN&A line. The railroad brought quick prosperity. Soon stores and shops, homes and schools were erected. The railroad was a boom to the area by providing a means of transportation for farm products that grew on the neighboring prairie. Fairview is the home town of John Q. Hammons, one of the most successful and innovative hotel and resort builders in America. A community center in the town was a gift from this very successful native son. Each November, the citizens of Fairview celebrate their town with a quilt and crafts show. This event draws many locals and hundreds of visitors who come to see and buy the quilts and crafts, and to admire a unique part of the community's past. An old horse-watering tank in the center of town is a big attraction for visitors and locals alike. . |
