However, it is also a close-knit community of upscale homes, as well as a burgeoning commercial area. Loma Linda was founded in the mid 1970s as a Country Club Estates settlement by a consortium of area businessmen, led by baseball great Mickey Mantle. The area was incorporated in mid-1995. Town functions, understandably, are based around the popular sport of golf. For example, a lighted golf cart parade is held annually at Christmas time. Many neighbors enjoy block parties, walking groups and other social activities that get families out of their homes and onto the streets. The town is well known for its voluntary spirit when it comes to maintaining clean roadsides and attractive entrance areas.
