NeoshoNeosho, the most populated city in Newton County, is a growing local economy with deep historical roots. The name "Neosho" comes from "ne-o-zho" or "Ne-u-zuh" which are Native American derivatives meaning "clear or abundant water." The names make sense, due to the nine springs that meander within the city's present-day borders. Those springs played an important part in the city's development. The area was first settled in the early 1800s with Neosho named the county seat in 1839. The city is now known as the "Flower Box City" and area businesses and residential homes vigorously uphold this theme by splashing window fronts and front yards with color. Big Spring Park has become a natural gathering place for family reunions and a restful spot for picnics and gatherings. Morse Park, located a mile north, is home to most local sports activities.
