NewtoniaNewtonia, a small community on 86 Highway in eastern Newton County, was the site of two significant Civil War battles, one of which included significant numbers of Native American soldiers. As a result, the town has continually been linked to the Civil War. At least four structures in the community date back to that period, mostly notably the 1852 Ritchey Mansion House. This home and approximately 20 acres of battlefield land are now owned and being preserved by the Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association. Newtonia is also home to a large Civil War-era cemetery and several beautiful 19th Century churches and homes. Some of the richest farmland in the United States surrounds the town. What is known as "Newtonia Soil" produces an abundance of agricultural crops about ten months of the year. The annual Newtonia Fall Festival is held each September and numerous Civil War activities are scheduled randomly throughout the year. |
