RacineIn late 1869, a post office was established in a small community in northwest Newton County. Settlement had begun there some 20 years before, but as stores and public institutions were built, a post office was opened and given the name Racine. During the peak of mining activities in the area, Racine became a weigh station for the mining district. On the Racine scales, ore wagons were weighed for an accounting of the ore tonnage. The community, located along Missouri Highway 86, remains vibrant today and is home to several churches, a post office and a few small businesses. |
