Redings MillRedings Mill was named for the Reding family, early settlers in Newton County. For many years, the town was called Shoalsburg, acknowledging its location on a lovely stretch of Shoal Creek. The Reding family was a major force and influence in the area, owning several successful businesses, including a ferry operation and a grist and saw mill and serving as post masters. In 1926, when the Shoalsburg sought incorporation, the name was changed to Redings Mill and several Joplin-area businessmen invested in the community. They promoted Spanish Mission type architecture in the town and opened several entertainment establishments, including a casino. A number of structures from that time remain in the community, including one of the homes owned by the Reding family patriarch, John Shelton Reding. This picturesque little community is located close to the new Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center and will likely benefit from the growth in tourism which will be drawn to this unique outdoor center. |
