Nestled down in the peaceful Lost
Creek Valley, Seneca boasts two city parks and a number of
landmarks, including the Veterans Memorial in front of City
Hall, the Little Country School House, and Frisco Caboose. The
area is rich in early-American and Native American history, with
buildings dating back to the 1800s and several Indian tribes
still active at the local level. The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of
Oklahoma operates a bingo hall and casino just across the state
line and hosts a pow-wow in the fall, as do several other tribes
in the Seneca, Mo.-Wyandotte, Ok., area.
Traversing down Main Street, one
finds a variety of restaurants, flea market and antique shops,
hardware stores, salons, and convenience stores. The small town
features its own funeral home, weekly newspaper, library, and a
school system rated as one of the best in the state.
Annual events include the Easter
Egg Hunt, Indian Country Jamboree (fall festival), City Wide
Garage Sales, and Christmas Parade. Senecašs 4th of July
celebration, the Freedom Festival, is becoming one of the
largest Independence Day events in the Midwest, attracting over
20,000 visitors to Seneca for a day full of games, a parade,
afternoon contests, and the finale to the patriotic celebration
- the Thunder Valley fireworks display.
