WentworthWentworth was an early zinc and lead mining town which sprang up alongside rail tracks. The foundation for Wentworth came from the misfortune of another community. The small mining town of Talmadge was basically vacated as people and businesses moved away to be near the rail line. The movement began about 1890 and, as more and more people left Talmadge, the post office was also transferred to the new community of Wentworth, which incorporated in 1894. The new town prospered from the business of the mines and miners and the instant access to the railroad. In time, a new industry cropped up around the town as great numbers of strawberries were harvested each year. Two berry associations were based in Wentworth. At the height of the berry season, as many as ten boxcar loads of berries would be shipped out of the town each day. Wentworth is still an agricultural community, but no longer the bustling mining and strawberry center it once was. PO Box 970 Neosho, Missouri 64850 roark@joplin.com |
